Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Expected to Earn $20M in North American Debut

Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film “Mickey 17” is expected to generate approximately $20 million during its opening weekend in North America, according to Variety. The film, starring Robert Pattinson, will release on March 7 across 3,770 theaters.

Industry analysts view the projected figures favorably considering the film’s R-rating and its unique artistic vision, though the $118 million production budget from Warner Bros. creates significant pressure for global financial success. To achieve profitability, the film will need to reach approximately $300 million in worldwide box office receipts.

The film has already demonstrated strong performance in South Korea, where it earned $6.6 million last weekend, outperforming Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” Global opening weekend estimates range between $40-45 million.

Critical reception has been largely positive, with the film currently holding an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times praised Bong’s work as “an unexpected blockbuster” and suggested he is “pioneering an entirely new genre,” while the Los Angeles Times called it a “bold incorporation of Bong’s genre-crossing, acidic satirical vision at a time when original sci-fi films are increasingly rare.”

However, more conservative outlets like the New York Post expressed some disappointment, noting that while far from terrible, the film might inevitably disappoint after the director’s massive success with “Parasite.”
